Review -- You Can't Hide -- Karen Rose -- Warner Vision -- April 2006

When Tess Ciccotelli's patients begin killing themselves, and their deaths prove to be murder, the psychiatrist ends up at the top of the suspect list. Who else but the good doctor could prey on her patients' worst fears? Her vehement denials that she had nothing to do with their deaths are ignored. The local police force has little sympathy for a woman who'd declared a brutal child killer insane, thus saving him from the death penalty. The fact that this killer had also murdered a cop only labels her more of a pariah among the tight-knit police force. One of them is Aiden Reagan, the detective who'd found one of the murdered children. As far as he's concerned, Tess Ciccotelli was as cold as ice and didn't deserve to practice. It would be a pleasure to nail her for murder. But it soon becomes clear that Tess is innocent.

Once Aiden confirms that someone has launched a meticulous campaign of terror against Tess, he sees her in a completely different light and grudgingly admits that she is not the cold "bitch" that everyone perceives. She is more than willing to cooperate with the investigation, but refuses to hand over her patients' confidential information. Aiden reminds her that her refusal would effectively stall the case and give the killer time to strike again, but Tess is adamant. Aiden finds himself admiring her commitment to her patients and his heart softens a little more and soon he can't deny his growing attraction. This new development only succeeds in infuriating the killer and the campaign to destroy Tess's career, her family and the woman herself escalates and puts Aiden's own family in the line of fire as well.

If there's one name synonymous with great romantic suspense it's Karen Rose - she just keeps getting better and better. Not only has she devised another crackerjack and very involved plot in You Can't Hide , she's once again peopled her story with wonderfully real characters whose complicated lives grab the reader from the moment they step onstage. Rose also has a real knack for creating villains - this antagonist's single-minded quest to destroy Tess is smart and very chilling. Rose goes the extra mile to explain motivation, making the villain that much more "human" and at times even eliciting a certain amount of sympathy. You Can't Hide is another stellar suspense, one that is sure to garner even more accolades for the talented Ms. Rose.

Action-packed serial killer thriller

In Chicago psychiatrist Dr. Tess Ciccotelli is stunned by what is happening to her patients. An unknown assailant is somehow torturing them into committing suicide. For obvious reasons, Homicide Detective Aidan Reagan thinks the psychiatrist is either the culprit or hiding the perp especially since she refuses to provide him access to her records that she insists is protected under her oath to protect the privacy of those who come to her for help.------ Aidan is upset with the shrink for not helping him solve the case, but also respects her spunk and determination to do what she believes is right for the good of those who see her. As he gets to know her, Aidan concludes that an enemy wants her professionally discredited and goes after her family. Aidan assumes this unknown foe will soon target the doctor for his or her final act.------ The intrigue behind this action-packed serial killer thriller is guessing the motive behind why the culprit seemingly wants to destroy the psychiatrist by taking out her patients, leaving clues pointing at the doctor's failures. The relationship between Tess and Aidan is attractive combatants so they add tension to the mix. The story line is filled with several grisly suicides which takes the suspense-filled story line at times over the edge but fans of Karen Rose will not care just keep a calculator handy to keep score.

Romance Reader at Heart

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: roses

Karen Rose is one of those authors that takes it to the next level-more (of everything) is better, and complicated high body count thrillers are her specialty. Why have one bad guy, when you can have several? Why have one horrible murder, when you can write a plethora of gruesome endings? Though, at times, it can be over the top, YOU CAN'T HIDE lives up to that same standard and is a good tie-in story to my personal favorite Rose book, I'M WATCHING YOU.

If it's crazy, maniacal, outrageous suspense you want, look no further than this one. I confess to figuring out the top baddie in the tale somewhat early on, but it's still a fun ride getting to the ending. At least Rose makes you want to know why the heroine is being set-up, even if you know who is orchestrating the mess. You won't guess who all the players are or why they are helping our deranged killer. That's some good storytelling, if you ask me. It also takes talent to make me care about the characters being offed and being framed. Add the fact that some of my favorite people resurface for cameos, and voile, you've got a cool, romantic suspense read.

Though sometimes there is a bit too much chaos and far-fetched plot, Rose manages to deliver the best of everything. Great characters, romance, murder, suspense, drama, heartache, thrills and chills with a dose of hot sex. Plan on staying up late to finish this one.
